Growing Algae as an Organic Fish Feed

When Bioponica began looking into Asian Pond Culture ten years ago we recognized the technique as potentially viable means of feeding fish and of 'fertilizing water' for growing plants. This led us to develop the process of 'nutricycling' - extracting a leachate from biomass for aquaponics and further processing with a vortex and biofilter for hydroponics. By decomposing biomass, as Asian Pond Culture has practiced for centuries, we are able to provide NPK nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, for growing plants in soilless grow beds. The un filtered carbon is a source of nourishment to grow algae aka 'microscopic grass', for the zooplankton and other aquatic animals up the food chain that are ultimately consumed by fish.

Feeding crawfish and small tilapia with algae - 2010

This was a first experiment with intentionally growing algae to feed fish. At the time I used urine as a source of nutrients for producing algae. This produced many mosquito larvae, and in the lower more anaerobic zones, midge fly red worms. All in all it was suitable diet for the omnivorous tilapia, crawfish and mollies.
